It’s been a long time coming, but Swerve Soccer is finally ready for beta testing on Android. It will be available on iOS shortly after the full Android release.

First of all, an apology to everyone who has been following the game’s development. In my last update back in January 2025 (soooo long ago) I said I hoped Swerve Soccer would be released before the end of that year. Clearly, that didn’t happen!

Development has taken considerably longer than I expected. Rather than rush the game out, though, I’ve continued improving the gameplay, expanding Career Mode and adding features until I felt the game was genuinely ready to be played by people outside development.

That point has finally arrived.

I’m now looking for Android players to help beta test Swerve Soccer before its full release.

About Swerve Soccer

Swerve Soccer is a new retro football game for Android (coming later on iOS) inspired by the classic football games of the 16-bit era — particularly Sensible Soccer, Kick Off and the hugely addictive Career Mode of Sensible World of Soccer. Matches can be played in top-down or side-on views, the camera can be zoomed in or out, and gameplay can be controlled using either the touchscreen or a compatible game controller.

The idea behind the game is simple: take the immediacy, freedom and skill of classic arcade football and combine it with the squad building, transfers, tactics and long-term progression of a football management game.

Football Where You Control the Ball

Swerve Soccer retro football gameplay on Android One of the biggest differences between Swerve Soccer and many modern football games is the amount of direct control you have over the ball.

Where you aim matters. How much power you apply matters. And the swerve you put on the ball matters.

Aim a shot towards the corner and that is where you are trying to put it. Fill more of the power meter and the ball travels faster. Add curl, topspin or backspin and you can completely change the trajectory.

The game isn’t choosing a predefined shot animation and deciding the outcome for you. Your input determines what happens.

Whether you’re using the touchscreen or a game controller, direction, power and swerve are all under your control. Once you start combining these, the possibilities become enormous.

You can bend shots around the goalkeeper, whip crosses into the box, play passes into space, hit dipping long-range shots, curl the ball around defenders and create attacking moves that weren’t pre-scripted by the game.

At first, the controls are deliberately easy to understand. But mastering them is another matter.

The deeper you get into Swerve Soccer, the more you realise how much you can do with the ball.

Inspired by the Great 16-Bit Football Games

Gameplay action from retro football game Swerve Soccer Swerve Soccer began with a question:

What would a game inspired by Sensible Soccer and Sensible World of Soccer look like if it were designed for modern phones and tablets?

I loved the simplicity of those old 16-bit football games. You didn’t need a controller full of buttons, yet there was enormous depth once you became skilled at actually playing them.

SWOS took that formula even further by combining playable football with a long-term Career Mode, transfers and the opportunity to progress through different managerial jobs. That combination of arcade football and career progression was the biggest inspiration for Swerve Soccer.

Swerve Soccer isn’t trying to recreate SWOS. It takes inspiration from the same philosophy and builds something designed around modern devices, modern progression systems and today’s players.

Build a Career in Football

Swerve Soccer Career Mode home screen Career Mode is at the heart of Swerve Soccer.

Take charge of a club and build your reputation over multiple seasons. Manage your squad, buy and sell players, develop your team, choose your tactics and compete across realistic league and cup structures.

Success can lead to better opportunities and bigger clubs, allowing your managerial career to develop rather than tying you permanently to the team you started with.

• Buy and sell players in the transfer market
• Improve and develop your squad
• Choose formations and tactics
• Compete in leagues and cups
• Progress through multiple divisions
• Receive opportunities to manage better clubs
• Build a career across different countries
• Play matches yourself or simulate them

And if you enjoy football management games more than arcade football, you don’t actually have to play every match. Career fixtures can also be simulated, allowing you to experience Swerve Soccer more like a traditional football management game.

Build and Improve Your Squad

Player profile screen in Swerve Soccer Players in Swerve Soccer are presented visually as player cards, but this isn’t primarily a card-collecting game.

Career Mode works much more like a traditional football management game: you buy and sell footballers through the transfer market, build a balanced squad and develop the players already at your club.

After matches you’ll also earn different types of cards that can be used to develop your players. These can improve attributes, add specialist skill traits, help with injuries, enable players to operate in different positions and more.

How you use those development cards becomes an important part of building your squad over the course of a career.

Using cards on your players wisely is a key part of Career Mode.

Pick Your Team and Your Tactics

Squad formation and tactics in Swerve Soccer Building a strong squad is only part of the job.

Choose your formation, decide who starts, organise your team and adapt your tactics to the players available to you. You’ll need to keep an eye on your players’ fitness levels and ensure you are playing them in their most suitable positions to get the best out of them.

Because you can then take control of that team yourself on the pitch, your management decisions and your playing ability come together in the same game.

Take on Trophy Mode

Swerve Soccer Trophy Mode Career Mode isn’t the only way to play.

Trophy Mode provides a more immediate challenge for players who want to play matches and chase silverware without committing to a full managerial career.

Unlike Career Mode, where you begin lower down the football ladder and have to earn your way towards the biggest clubs, Trophy Mode lets you start with one of the strongest teams in the game. Pick an elite side, jump straight into high-level matches and focus on winning trophies.

Take on increasingly difficult opposition and earn rewards that help strengthen your team as you try to win a 10-round cup competition. There are five increasingly challenging trophies to compete for.

It’s designed to offer a quicker, more immediate alternative to Career Mode, while still using the same skill-based match gameplay at the heart of Swerve Soccer.

Help Beta Test Swerve Soccer on Android

Swerve Soccer has been tested extensively during development, but there’s no substitute for getting it onto a much wider range of Android phones and tablets — and seeing how real players actually play the game.

I’m now looking for players to take part in the Swerve Soccer Android beta.

You don’t need any previous beta-testing experience. If you enjoy retro football games, arcade football games, football management games or games such as Sensible Soccer and SWOS, I’d be particularly interested in hearing what you think.

Swerve Soccer Beta FAQ

Is Swerve Soccer an arcade football game or a football management game?
Both. Swerve Soccer combines directly controlled arcade football matches with squad management, transfers, player development, tactics and a full Career Mode. You can play matches yourself or simulate them if you prefer the management side.

Is Swerve Soccer like Sensible Soccer?
Swerve Soccer is inspired by classic 16-bit football games including Sensible Soccer, Kick Off and Sensible World of Soccer.

The aim isn’t to reproduce those games, but to bring the combination of accessible, skill-based football and long-term career progression to modern devices. Swerve Soccer deliberately plays at a slightly more measured pace than Sensible Soccer, making the controls better suited to modern touchscreens while retaining the responsiveness, freedom and skill that made those games so compelling.

Can I play offline?
Yes, the game fully supports offline play. Online features and optional rewarded bonuses can speed up progression, but they are not required to enjoy the game.

Can I play using a game controller?
Yes. Match gameplay supports compatible game controllers as an alternative to the touchscreen controls.

How does shooting work?
You control the direction, power and swerve of the ball. The strength of the shot comes from the power you apply, while direction and spin determine where the ball travels.

That means goals aren’t selected from a collection of predefined outcomes — learning how to control the ball is a fundamental part of mastering the game.

Does Swerve Soccer have a Career Mode?
Yes. Career Mode includes transfers, squad development, tactics, league and cup competitions, managerial progression and the opportunity to move to other clubs. Matches can either be played or simulated.

What devices is the beta available on?
The initial beta is for Android phones and tablets. An iOS version is planned later.

Do I need Discord?
No. Discord is optional, but it’s the easiest place to report issues, make suggestions and follow beta updates.

When will Swerve Soccer be released?
There isn’t a final release date yet. The purpose of the beta is to identify problems, gather feedback and make sure the game is ready before the full Android release.
